I did my MBA from Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal (www.iifm.ac.in ) some 20 years back . I had the experience  of a lifetime. For the first time I could smell and hear the voice of the countryside. I still think that my green MBA experience was crucial in shaping my vision for the future.

How about you? Did you go to IIFM, IRMA, IIM, TERI University or to any technical university or colleges in India or Internationally imparting Green education in the sciences or engineering? How did it shape your future? Which schools do you think are at the cutting edge in providing a Green Education that has practical usefulness in shapiing your future?

Well CK, I have some different views on this issue. Brand name only works if the person has passion and zeal inside him. If I am not wrong then almost all of us came across examples of the persons who got Green Degrees from the Brand Institutes but unfortunately changed the trek..... on the other hand we might also came across the examples who did their education from the unknown or little known institutes and created an example...... From where Baba Amte completed his green degree or from where Medha Patekar obtained her green degree......

So I strongly disagree that institute has any role in shaping inner strength and give my choice to the PASSION and ZEAL of any person who works without any expectations and returns (in today's world - monetary gains) for MOTHER NATURE......

I may be wrong but in my views there is no institute on this earth who could develop inborn quality of human........ and if s/he thinks s/he can then yes s/he can...........

 

In last I will state famous lines DO WHAT YOU ARE BORN FOR rather then what one acquire in form of degrees.....

Satya, I agree that your inner zeal for the most part for doing good shapes your destiny.

However, I also believe that there are a lot of students and citizens who want to work for the environment but do not know how to do it in a very systematic and sustainable way so that they can also earn their livelihood and potentially create more employment all around in this sector. This is where colleges and universities and a practical green education fit in. We need to create more green opportunities . The right education will alone fulfill that vision.

yea it's true you don't need to have  a formal degree in your endeavours to save environment but it happens only when we live close to the nature.However,  it is also established fact that for those who live in cities in artificial environments away from the green valleys and rivers,such type of institutions do help in making us aware about our Mother Nature , the real life situations and the importance of green living.

Dear Freinds,

Going through both Satya's Chandra Kishore,s conversation, I feel that although brands may not to be so important for the passionate people (we do have many great examples). However, for a systematic know-how about the subject one needs to be in some or other good schools which can nurture and guide their passion and zeal. We know that these great examples had gone through many hard-nut-cracking experiences and emerged winners. But why only few thick skinned nut cracking people contribute for the well being of humankind? Don't we require lot many such great peoples for a better world? So here comes these schools which help you in realize your dreams.

But not many could make it to these epitomes and classic institutes. Many more could not afford both time and money. So some institutes are also required which could give us some flexibility. I had some good experiences with IndSearch, Pune. They offer 2-years part time PG Diploma in Environment Management of University of Pune. The uniqueness of this course is that it offers more learning flexibility and good experienced  and eminent visiting faculty apart from the regular faculty. They also give great emphasis on learning by doing with special mentoring by the visiting faculty. Perhaps, that's why they have kept very low intake.

I think what is more important is the practical experience of working in projects that is required in this subject. No matter where you do your theoretical courses from, after PG one must join some active organisation and work for atleast 1-2 years in various env. projects to get a hands on experience. What we learn while working is different from the study. I personally feel that while I learned many things when i did my M.Sc. in Env. Sc. from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, but the experience and practical knowledge that I got while working at NEERI, Nagpur in various Env. related project was the one which actually made me a true Env. person. It is the most needed for all our fresh graduates & PG.

I would also encourage people to give their ideas with the regard to the areas which they feel an env. prog. should have so that there is one holistic programme for a particular branch in Env. Being in Education line, I will be able to bring out some innovative courses to suit the industry/educational needs with your valuable suggestions.

"What we learn while working is different from the study".

This is indicates a bad course from a bad institution. More wider the gap, worst is the course. Ironically, most of the courses in our country are designed to be different from reality.  This is one the basic shortcoming in our education system. Instead of striving to the lessen the gap, education institutions conspire to create illusion about their courses. And we all know that when we fail to understand illusion, we call it "magic". I wonder, (when one of the student provoked me) that this what the magic wand these great institutes and brands provide to their students. Some do provide practical education to same extend and others provide illusion of the same.

I hope things will change with the new breed of smart, young and dynamic people. Todays student do not feel like to attend the class if the One Hour spend is not worth of bringing any change in his/her knowledge and skill.

The idea of giving through a formal education process to acquire a green MBA/MSc or any other relevant degree only reinforces the concept CK is putting forward that education still is a necessity .. Of course exceptions to the rule will always be there as Satya has mentioned .. but in today's world of rapid growth and development.. we need change leaders particularly from the younger generation who can shape the future of this earth sustainably. Given that most of the students eventually pick up careers in industry moulding them to understand the linkages between industry and .. environment/development is critical   and the  timing seems right for academic institutions to nurture talent and build a pool of manpower who will perhaps be able to see  sustainability initiatives as business opportunities .

Our MBA programme at Symbiosis,Pune focuses on these key linkages between energy and environment  with a solutions oriented approach with lots of industry interaction.
