The first English investigation of the watersheds of the Silent Valley area was in 1847 by the botanist Robert Wight.[1] The British named the area Silent Valley because of a perceived absence of noisy Cicadas. Another story attributes the name to the anglicisation of Sairandhri.

many explainations-

1. scientific- absence of noisy insect called cicadas/ home to lion tailed macaque(Macaca silenus)

2. mythical- Sirendhri(google it this is interesting)

3. legal- this valley was the proposed site for hydroelectric dam which was later on rejected. in court case the other party was absent-silent hence the name silent valley

thanks a lot.....
