Environment and disasters are inextricably linked. Ecological degradation is a key underlying driver of vulnerability and disaster risk. Environmental hazards like floods, drought, coastal storms, erosion, landslides, pest attacks, forest fires, man-animal conflicts, epidemics, and extreme weather events are known to aggravate due to the impacts of climate-change. Environmental concerns are increasingly recognized in post-disaster response and sustainable recovery framework. University Grants Commission (UGC) considered incorporating disaster management modules in environmental studies/sciences, and most Central Universities have already envisaged a Centre for Disaster Management under their School of Environment & Earth Science Studies.
Understanding the relationships between environment and disaster risk reduction, towards integration of implementation framework at local and national levels, is therefore, key to sustainable development. United Nations Environment Programme under the aegis of UN-PEDRR involving UNDP, IUCN, ADPC, UN-OCHA, etc. has recently developed a module on EcoDRR (involving NIDM) and piloted first in Sri Lanka (May 2011) and then in New Delhi (Dec. 2011).
2. NIDM is organizing a One Week Training Course on “Ecosystem Approach to Disaster Risk Reduction (EcoDRR)” during 8-12 April, 2013 at NIDM, New Delhi. Under this programme issues like ecosystem services, livelihood, role of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), environmental laws, and policies in relation with disaster risk management will be discussed.
3. Nominations of up to two senior/middle level professor(s)/official from the environmental sciences/natural resources/agriculture faculty and Academic Staff College of a Central/State/Deemed University, for attending this programme shall be accepted. There is no course fee for nominated delegates and a Certificate of Successful completion shall be provided. Travel expenses shall be borne by the nominating organisation whereas the boarding and lodging expenses shall be borne by NIDM. The nominations may be sent latest by 2nd April 2013 over email or fax (011-23702442, 46) to Assistant Professor Ms. Sreeja S.
