What is the scope of M.Sc in Zoology with specialisation in Environment Science?

Since now a days, M.Sc Environment Sciences is already in so many institutions, then in which field would a student with M.Sc Zoology with specialisation in environment science should go for? As now a days, there are masters in so many applied subjects (m like biochemistry, microbiology, fisheries, entomology, genetics, etc) so what is relevance of having masters in basic science?

Dear S Nagar

India me generally jrf srf ra ki post milti hai.Iske alawa agr govt job chahiye to jack lgani padti.this true.Curption kafi hai. Scope subject k according nhi persion to persion bnta bigdta rhta hai. This is practically true.

basic sciences candidate can go for research or teaching, means very less scope ....

I think Masters in Zoology with specialization in environmental science will open doors for opportunities in broad areas like impact of climate change on species, studies on terrestrial biodiversity, marine diversity, etc. Also there is scope for journalism if one wants to be an environmental journalist (wildlife, etc) s/he should be aware basic of zoology with environmental science.

If one wants to specialize after masters s/he can do PhD in the related field.

Dear Ms. Swati,

Greetings!

There is no need to have any degree if you have natural affection towards "Mother Nature" and have passion to work for Nature Conservation..... Degree is just the certification for the knowledge (which I doubt.....in today's concern) from any academic platform.

Go through the workers who were not Masters of Subject by degree but by their passion.......

So it hardly matters from which stream you belong.... environment is for all and small step &/or effort of individual is droplet which makes drop and finally result positively on the ground with cumulative actions.....

So get up and start working in the direction of conserving local heritage around you, leave aside the degrees but apply the knowledge gained.....

All the best

Satya

this is an interesting point ..... but the important factor is the content of the MSc and wether is it accredited by a professional organisation.  If it is acredited than that is your assurance that the MSc programme will be useful to you in the work place.

I hope this is helpful - if I can be of any further help do contact me

M Sc in basic sciences has never lost its relevance and won't do so in future as well. As far as the research opportunities are concerned, it has never shrunk down for students of basic sciences. It's actually the perception that has changed. I do interact with many students regularly, and they say that they are biotechnology students. But when u interact u realize that neither they are biologists, nor technologists. I do get students in my laboratory (B Tech Biotechnology students), and when I ask them what are your plans for your dissertation, then their simply reply is that "sir, our professors have instructed us to undertake a research topic, where there is a laboratory components". Just imagine when a students gets this kind of advise from his/her professor, what is going to be the fate of such students.

Thus as far as one is interested in research, and can articulate a good scientific question supported by a strong hypothesis, zoology and/or environmental sciences in immaterial. I would say that a M Sc zoology students with Environmental since specialization students is no way different than a M Sc environmental science students, where the professors are all from Life science background. It would be similar. If one tries to analyses, many of the Environmental Sciences departments of Indian Universities have senior faculty members who are basically doctorates in Zoology and/or Botany, there being no Env Sc discipline during their times. And ultimately the practical classes are oriented based on their expertise. A zoology student does LC 50 / LD 50 experiment taking fish as a model organism, and Env Sc students take earthworm. What is the difference? The basic principle of the experiment being the same.

The above description is my personal observation.

Dear Swati

Don't get disheartened. There is lots of Scope for Students of Zoology specialising in Environmental Science/Env. Biology. These days there is dearth of good students  for Biodiversity Impact Assessment. Ecology and biodiversity is in thing these days. Knowledge of Taxonomy is what is most sought after thing for freshers joining Consultancies. I believe that Knowledge about animals including birds, reptiles, amphibians and  their habitat, their IUCN status can take you very far in your career.

Best wishes

Dr.Praveen Mathur

Now a days Environmental toxicology field is rapidly growth. You can try to do your research for Enviro toxicology effected to the living organism related field.

Dear all

Thank you all for your suggestions and opinion.

This will surely pave a way to the basic sciences students to new horizons....

regards

Swati

Swati...!

Biodiversity Impact Assessment is a better option for you and its not a small sector. EIA sector is having plenty of jobs for experts and as far as my knowledge you are having good knowledge on biodiversity impact assessment.

go for that.

cheers.

My response to the statement by Piyush Gupta: "India me generally jrf srf ra ki post milti hai.Iske alawa agr govt job chahiye to jack lgani padti.this true.Curption kafi hai. Scope subject k according nhi persion to persion bnta bigdta rhta hai. This is practically true".

In my opinion your statement is full of pessimism. Who said that there is no scope for students graduating in basic sciences such as Zoology. Before making such statements, please visit the relevant websites such as UGC, DST, DBT, an other non-governmental donors. There are plenty of schemes available, and very few takers. How does applying to DST Women-scientist or INSPIRE Fellow is related with corruption. Its something like the pseudo researchers in India correlate anything and everything with climate change. I had read one article on water quality sometime before, and the authors have written that the change might be due to climate change.  and that kind of researchers will only say that there is no scope etc. Be a true researcher, and you see only scopes everywhere.

Some of the colleagues (in this platform) do suggest students that join EIA consultancy firms etc. What does a student learn up to M Sc level. and you are suggesting that he/she should join an EIA consultancy firm. and later you would blame that EIA consultants are not doing genuine job of EIA, and the reports are compromised. One should always join an EIA firm after getting adequate knowledge on the subject.
