relationship between BOD & TSS/TDS in water quality

Hi everyone,

I need information on the relationship between BOD & Solids (TSS/TDS) in water samples (pond / lake source). pls explain this. or send me if any source of information available to indi.rd@gmail.com

thank u.

If TSS increase there will be decrease in photosynthetic activity. Resultantly, DO levels will reduce. As DO and BOD have inverse relationship, reduction in DO will lead to increased BOD in due course of time.

I don't think there is any direct relationship between BOD and Solids. It depends on other factors like organic and inorganic content in solids. composition of solids like more salt may show low microbial activity etc. As a general rule it can be taken into consideration that more solid leads to more impurity that is BOD.

The BOD is directly disproportional to TSS, But there will not be any relation with TDS.

BOD is having relationship with COD but not with TSS or TDS.

There is no mathematical or empirical relationship among these variables in lake or ponds. However, generally BOD increases with total solids, which may include mostly biodegradable organic matter.

BOD measuring for know the particular aquatic system Organic pollution condition. whenever BOD is high simultaneously DO will be high due to high concentration of organic contends reduce the air volume of the water system. the final result is eutrophication  problem happens in the lake or pond system.

TDS - industrial effluents enter the lake system that will increase TDS of the water.

Most of the TSS is organic nature because house hold sewage and municipal sewage enter the lake and pond.

Salinity shows correlation with total hardness and TDS, whereas DO shows correlation with BOD. Rest of

the parameters show no intra-correlation such as Turbidity, BOD, TSS, NO3, NH3, PO4, etc.

There is no direct relationship between BOD, TSS and TDS, but when you are wanting to lower down the BOD values, all the 3 parameters start relating to each other.
