Strengthen the Solid Waste Management practices

Although JNNURM, Muncipalities and other private players engaged in the Solid Waste Management practices in major cities in India. But there is need to strengthen the rules to enforce the Muncipalties/Trust/Private players especially in slum, rural and sub-rural areas of the Indian cities, where our major population resides.

The anti pollution laws and our government along cannot do anything until unless every citizen is aware of the environmental pollution and their effects. There is much corruption in the politics, which are more responsible to implement any law or policy to make the water and air clean. There must be the proper planning about the effects and control measures of environmental pollution, government should initiate and help by awareness complain to save environment. There should not be the political propaganda but should be the integral part of our educational programs. Our government is spending the money to clean the polluted rivers and air, rather than to aware the common peoples to avoid/prevent the pollution. Common peoples should understand about the fact that if we are degrading our environment we are harming ourselves. Any government at its own level cannot achieve the goals of sustainable development until the people has a participatory role in it.

Although players are engaged in solid waste management practices but still waste is not managed as per MSW management and handling rules. In most of the major cities disposal of waste takes place in open as sanitary landfill is not available, which further deteriorates the environment. Municipalities still fail to improve the condition of Urban India (despite the fact that MSW rule,2000 are applicable to every municipal authority) then how can we expect the municipalities to give rural India a better place to live in, in terms of sanitation and hygiene??

Still SWM, its importance and phenomenal impact on the entire society is at large and yet to be penetrated into the public awareness.

Latest technologies, its benfits for the entire society needs to be publicized openly through various media/channels.

The society's big gap is Urban-Rural sectors and the attitude of "CHALTA HAI" & "Jo hoga woh dekha jayega". In society, everyone has to understand that right from his OWN ROLE and then others roles are involved for the successful implementation of SWM.

In Andhra Pradesh the implementation of SWM is improving and wings expanding to rural sectors.

What is more important is awareness (education). Rural situation is different from urban. Collection, storage transportation, treatment and disposal problems can be addressed for organized urban situation. In slums it is more difficult. In rural areas, houses are located far apart and the urban strategy fails.
In urban areas the problem is aggravated by cost of land and cost of transportation.
The Not In My Back Yard(NIMBY) syndrome is also evident. Find an a locally and technologically acceptable site is all the more difficult.
Our decision makers (in most cases with connivance of their advisors) unfit sites and technologies are chosen. There is no sincere effort to control odor by installing appropriate reactors. Often God's own technology is working.
