Waste Management - A real challenge ?
In India, Even though there are lot of technical expertise, legal regulations , policies ...etc related to Waste management
But in reality . Still there is a huge gap in waste management sector .
Hope, only in few parts of India the system is good .
Even-though the waste management system seems to be good inside the industries , factories
My day to day experience
I feel unhappy to see the street with mixture of waste. lots of unwanted waste are dumped in unnoticed areas , rivers...etc.
To say an best example : I was riding on bicycle in the roads of Chennai.
During my journey of 5 Kms . I feel a very very bad odour in the streets . lot of rotten chicken waste was lying in the road.
And also , I saw loads and loads of waste on both side of roads .
Every where : Whether its a near an industry , road , public place .river. or water body ...etc
Every time : Whether its a morning , afternoon, evening or night
Every body : Whether its a common layman, school students or college professionals, or educated community .
I feel shame for not doing anything for the same .
Hope we together we should do something to see our country " A better country with good waste management system in place "
Time for Action :
I pen down some key action plan points which are in my mind.
1. Legal : Strict legal policy to be implemented related to waste management.
There should be Police force specific to environment management. (If there is any illegal dumping/ no proper segregation it should be penalised ).
2. Accountability : Waste should be accounted generated from each home/office /other buildings..
( Attack at the source )
3. Tax : Tax should be implemented for waste . based on generation by generators . the fund can be utilised for waste management.
4. Waste management booth : Recycling centres / booth to established at every reasonable radius ( Like ATM CENTRE).
Unemployed youth, Self-Help group, poor people can be employed in the waste management booth after prior training .
5. Environment Resource Card :
Like Voters ID/PAN CARD/RATION CARD . Every individual inspite of age/qualification..etc should have an Environment card . The card will have multiple function related to environment
The card will act like an resource card for the individual . ( They can earn credit points. When the hand-over the recyclable waste to the recycling centres/Booth .)
6. Buy - Back policy :
In my experience, I have seen many materials all simply thrown out even though it has be utilised several times.
( Each big should should establish recycling centres/collection booth to get back the packings from the consumers and used further either directly or after recycling
Tie-up should be done so that the card can be used and the amount earned from the card shall be used to deduce/pay the Electricity bill, Gas bill, train... ..etc.
And also possibilities can be explored to use in private centres .
7. Awareness & Training :
Regular awareness to be done for all such as public, commercial buildings, waste generators shops ...etc in all media, all modes with the help of environment experts, students. to the public , commercial buildings, ..etc
Please share your experience/ action plan.
Let us put together and communicate in a better way to the decision making body
( Finally, I pilot study can be done the system can stabilised and implemented )

I don't know ... how many will agree with me ...
...we all technocrats know the ways to improvise the waste management system in India ... even what thoughts / ways you have presented are also commendable ...
..but one fact we should accept ... until unless we will not come with strong will power for the reason ... we can not come up and can't be role model or can not come with sustainable waste management system ... these all are very theoretical approaches ...
Problem lies somewhere else ... without rejuvenate our mind-set ... we can't do any thing ... all things originate first from our mind ... either bad or good ... agree ???
Let me ask one simple to question to all ... answer it with full of honesty and in light of your soul's truthfulness ... how many of us follow ... Place these wastes (resources) at their right place (segregated bins ...) ... how many times we ignore it .. ... ???
Frankly speaking, ... I have observed that many peoples including well qualified technocrats belonging to even the most educated society i.e. IITs campus .. do not follow the ways ... as prescribed by campus ...
So, if we really wish to come with the Role Model System ... then very First Thing ... I would like to suggest that ... WE MUST STOP SAYING THESE OUT-PLACED RESOURCES AS WASTE ... DO U AGREE WITH ME ??? ... just one critical thought - nothing else --- please think in critical way and then answer it ... thanks & regards !!!
Dear rajesh,
Excellent idea.

yes Mr. Rajesh Kumar .N, Together We can
Now in many sectors like new societies, High Rise Buildings waste water management, solid waste management is mandatory....no doubt their is lots of loop hole in the system....
Other aspect in Indian scenario is lack of other supportive infrastructure, discontinue electricity supply etc. adding to it...
I think in country like India....we need to promote more nature based technologies...for management of waste....our climatic conditions also favors such techniques and technologies....
