Profile Information

About me: During June 2010-Feb 2012, I was attached with the University of the South Pacific (serving 12 Island Countries in the Pacific) as Professor and Director, Pacific Centre for Environment & Sustainable Development. I have served the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in various capacity (Senior, Principal and Chief Scientific Officers) for over 20 years.
I have over two decades of progressive professional experience and entrepreneurship in tertiary level teaching and research in development / application of global (coupled Ocean-Atmosphere GCM) & regional numerical simulation models and relevant scientific and technical experience for planning and carrying out global and nested regional climate modeling experiments to simulate the future global and regional climates. My research interests are aimed at development and validation of a multi-model ensemble climate prediction system and on consolidation and intensification of the climate change prediction research efforts on simulation the detailed climate (of the Asia and the Pacific region) and assess the consequences of future changes in radiative forcing to address the issues of risks and vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation on regional / national scale in general (through enhancement of our capability to understand, anticipate and manage the ecological and societal impacts of climate change and its variability) and in reducing the socio-economic impacts of climate variability in countries of Asia and the Pacific.

My Green Mission: To support, complement and enhance Asia and Pacific's overall excellence in development objectives through building bridges between ideas and decisions and meshing the insights of scientific research, technical and institutional analyses on issues related to environmental concerns and climate change for sustainable livelihood.

Educational Institution Last Attended/ Attending: I earned a Master’s degree in Geophysics in the year 1969 (first class with 2nd rank in order of merit with specialization in Meteorology) from Banaras Hindu University, one of oldest and internationally reputed academic institution in India. I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by this University in the year 1972.

Area of Expertize/ interest: I am the only scientist from India to have served the select group of contributors for the four scientific assessment reports of climate change conducted thus far by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change continuously for the past two decades.

You are invited to participate, exchange views and present research work at Multidisciplinary National Conference on “Science of Climate change and Earth’s Sustainability: Issues and Challenges” on scientists-people partnership basis at Lucknow from 12-14 Sept., 2011 organised by The Society of Earth Scientists constituted to bring scientists of all the domains of earth science (including environmental scientists) and people at large together. Limited travel grant may also be provided to non-funded participants depending upon quality of their work.
