Lakes are being polluted

Lakes are being polluted by dumping waste into it by residential an commercial complexes. A resent study has shown that the lake water in Chennai is not even fit for watering plants. The city lakes are highly polluted and TDS are exceeding permissible limits. TDS in Taramani Lake is over 200mg/l. The water from Chennai lakes is not even suitable for any cultivation, according to the study conducted by CPR Environmental Education Centre. Construction activity, garbage dumping and release of untreated sewage are the reasons for the pollution of the lakes, but here the IT companies were dumping e-waste in Taramani Lake. Due to E-Waste the lead level in water had increased. The IT establishments are dumping hardware items, chips, boards and monitors. Concrete waste from construction sites, plastics and other waste from the households and commercial establishment is killing the water bodies. The ecosystem has to be restored so that the city does not lose its water recharge systems. Though the lakes, ground water levels have been increased due to rainfall, the water is not in a quality to be used. This is not the state of only Chennai lakes most of the lakes in India are being polluted this way.
These days the companies such as IT, construction, manufacturing etc have environmental department to take care of waste but what are they doing. Are they allowing the waste to be thrown that way into lakes? Why don’t they suggest ideas for different ways of disposal of waste instead into lakes?

It is the natural consequence of urbanization and uncontrolled disposal of waste. Every lake, small or , is bound to be silted and polluted over time. We can delay the process by appropriate management practices. If you look at the mass balance of urban living, organic matter, nitrogen compounds and few are degraded. Conservative materials rapidly reach receiving surface water, and slowly they reach ground water. The findings have little significance except sensitizing people. Some thing must be done collectively. Governments (or rulers)n find it easy to sensitize people by giving rice for Re 1/kg, but does not care to provide safe drinking water.

In general, in the recent days  lakes are protected by either  public or Govt/ private agencies. I am residing in the Visakhapatnam city, in and around Visakhapatnam there are many lakes with out any pollution and these are  catering  the drinking water needs  of the city also. Visakhapatnam is a fast growing city with so much of the garbage and waste materials. But these materials are  disposing the outside the city. Lakes are important in the aquatic ecosystem for growth of the different micro and macro flora & fauna. Besides the drinking water and irrigation purposes these lakes are beautiful site seeing centers for the public. Finally,  protection of these beautiful mini ecosystems  may be undertaken by the researchers and local educational organisations rather than the Government.

The Ministry of Env. & Forests is implementing two schemes namely, National Wetland Conservation Program and National Lake Conservation Plan for conservation of Lakes & Wetlands in the country. State govts. can submit proposals in accordance with published guidelines, for seeking central assistance

Government is definitely interested, but you/we need to approach them with the problem.  We had a similar problem in Thane , and we approached MoEF with the problem along with the solution. We got a very good positive response from them. 

I suggest approach them and they will definitely help you, provided the solution is  sustainable on a long term basis, without further harming the environment.

Lakes are very sensitive and fragile ecological systems in the nature. We should prevent the pollution and conserve the lakes. these ecosystems are very important for a great variety of biodiversity. Direct dumping of solid waste into lakes is a bad practice. It should be prevented. Great Lakes of Kashmir are the big examples of Lake ecosystem degradation.
