In India one type of Environmental consultancy is providing services for EIA consultants. These consultants (farms) recruit experts from different subject areas like ecology, biodiversity, land use, geology, water resource, sociology, ETP etc. The experts, when assigned to a job of preparing a EIA report for any proposed factory, infrastructure, mines, township etc., collect relevant data and prepare a report in line with the TOR (terms of reference) prescribed by the Ministry of Forest and Environment.

Hai Ms Kaur

Nothing special for girls; any thing for which a boy is eligible, you are also eligible.

For the scope refer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_consulting

Do not take it for livelihood. Livelihood would naturally follow your passion.

Hi!!! everyone , My name is Amit Tiwari , I have recently completed my MSc in Environmental Monitoring ,Modelling and Reconstruction from University of Manchester ,U.K and desperately looking for job and want to work as environmental consultant..please help me to find out jobs any help is really appreciated.

well you need to be a specialist with some experience behind your back in your field of work. Experience can be excused if you get a placement from a premier institute (IIT/TERI/IIFM)

Hi Manmeet,

Other than the typical Environmental Consulting firms that assist clients mostly with EIAs and permitting, you have Environmental management consulting firms, like the one I am employed with, which do not take up EIA projects, but act as Project Managers on such tasks. For instance we help the client choose an accredited Environmental Consultant and then we scrutinize their work and make sure that the assigned task is executed as per the requirements.

Strangely most environmental undergrad and grad students in our country are only aware of EIA and water/air pollution control, while the fact remains that the field is so interdisciplinary that it would be hard to put together the various profiles that environmental professionals can get into.

For instance, Environmental Due Diligence. "Persons involved in buying, selling, lending, and managing commercial real estate routinely need to perform a variety of types of commercial property due diligence. Environmental due diligence during commercial real estate and transactions can include Phase I and Phase II Environmental site assessments." (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_diligence).

Listed below are a few key words from my firm's profile which you can google for a better understanding:

EHS Liability/Risk Management | Site Remediation | Siting and Design Feasibility Studies | Product Life Cycle Assessment | EHSQ Benchmarking | Regulatory Permitting Assistance |  Multi-disciplinary Specification Writing | ISO 14001. BS 7750 EMS | BS 8800/OHSAS 18001 OHSMS | ISO 9000 QMS, TQM | EHSQ Reporting (Internal/External) | EHSQ Compliance Auditing/Energy Audits | EHSQ Training | Water/Air Pollution Control | Solid/Hazardous Waste Management | Pollution Prevention / Waste Minimization | Emission Trading/Clean Development Mechanism

I would personally choose a consulting job over industry, as you get to work on diverse projects which presents you an opportunity to learn something new everytime.

If you are looking for a job, do let me know as there are openings in my firm.

My LinkedIn Profile (http://in.linkedin.com/pub/shekar-sharma/20/714/b5)

And as far as my exposure goes, their is absolutely no differentiation between a Boy and Girl in this field. As a matter of fact, most MNCs we have worked with, women are at the project management levels. Most female colleagues I worked with were so career oriented and determined that they made me many run for their money. I have known women consultants who would always be on a go, they would be flying to multiple sites in a week. And they grew. But lets also look at the other side, I have known some women who said that they would not travel to clients site, or that they cant be away from home for more than two days after that they need to come back, stay at their place for a day and the they can travel, or women who said that their parents/ husbands / boyfriends have a problem. If such are your limitations than look for a profile/consulting job where you don't move out of your cubical.

As far as my knowledge goes, there is no differentiation among sexes, definitely not in the firm I have been employed with. You are treated as an Individual and your growth depends on you. Anyhow, consulting is "Intellectual Service", so how does the sex of a person matter???

Hi Manmeet,

I am an Environment Consultant and i am very proud of my job.

As you know, environment itself is such a vast subject. So, there are many opportunities in this field. Consulting works may vary from Environmental Impact Assessments, Preparing Environmental Management Plans, to designing Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants. Waste management and Waste Minimization is also one of the core subjects where  we have good number of openings. Also, there is lot of scope of gaining Consulting Opportunities in the fields of Climate Change - Adaptation and Mitigation, Watershed Development and Natural Resources Management.

This is a very interesting subject and the role of consulting in this subject is even more interesting.

Wish you good luck in your future endeavors.

Thanks to all of you for your informative replies. I have gained a lot of knowledge from your answers. I am greatly thankful.

Hi Manmeet. A consultant job can be in any environmental field. Our field is vast and you need to show or have interest in one specific direction which would be your core area of working at later stage. A consultant is one who gives consultancy which is nothing but idea, plan ( in form of some report or document) to take up any project. I am in consultancy associated for last 5 years. My work area is solid waste, yes you have to be on-site to understand the problems associated with the site then only you will be in a position to develop a plan. Not that you are always on-site but yes without having experience of working on-site you can't develop something off-site. Once you are grown professionally, you get team working under you and can collect data for you and you can work and develop the documents with your experience and provide consultancy(your advice to client ).

All the best identify your area of work and go ahead.

Thanks,

Anupama Madhok Sud

There are many divisions among environment consultants ,it can be EIA,CDM, renewable energy, green building etc. The work given for girls in EIA consultancy will be with regard to your specialization like GIS expert or meteorologist , ecological expert etc ..this all are part field work and part office work .If you are willing to work full time in office , then you will be preparing report and TOR( term of reference). So, in which type consultancy you are going to opt for?.I'l give necessary info..
