Dear Vikram,

If am getting your concern correctly - you are preparing a CEMP for a project having a significant insulation works requirement. In that case, your EMP specific to insulation work should highlight/recommend the following issues:

1. minimization of waste (insulation materials) and sometime recycling of the waste into the insulation process locally.

2. When insulation thickness is not unduly restricted, please recommend fiber insulation. In general, the fiber insulation materials (cellulose, fiberglass, mineral wool, cotton) have lower environmental impacts associated with their manufacture than foam plastic insulation materials, although they usually do not offer as high per-inch R-values.

3. Other aspect is health and safety of the workers during construction. A great deal of controversy surrounds potential health concerns of contact with synthetic mineral fibers, including fiberglass and mineral wool. Until the controversy is resolved, the installers and other workers should be well protected when handling the materials, and great care should be taken to prevent the materials from infiltrating occupied spaces in the building.

4. In case the area under insulation activities are confined and ventilation could be an issue, advise for proper ventilation, lighting and may be you should recommend to setup indoor air quality monitoring equipments!

Hope this will help, as I said before, please don't hesitate to write me back and discuss your concerns further.

with best wishes,

Sudhanshu

Dear Dr. Sudhanshu,

Many thanks. Well, my concern is to identified the environmental aspect arise during insulation process, Hot as well as Cold. For the insulation we are using Synthetic Resin Bonded Mineral Wool, Synthetic Resin Bonded Mineral Wool Blankets and Cellular Glass (Foamglas) according to ASTM. Offcourse with the accessory materials like Foam Rubber, Toggles, Rubber mastic tape, Reinforcing Mesh, Adhesive for Cellular Glass etc..

Normally I used to prepare Construction Env Mng Plan (CEMP) but the current project required specific EMP for Insulation activities during construction that shall be coupled with CEMP.

Particular to insulation work activity; what are the aspects significant to environment ‘ENVID’ is concern to me to identify.

Regards

Vikram

Dear Vikram,

Check the EMP template at http://bundaberg.qld.gov.au/files/EMP-%20Guide%20only.doc

Trust, this would be helpful working doc for you to start. For additional environmental attributes please consult the project specific compliance NOC from the authorities.

Feel free to ask any further help you need.

with best wishes
