 ally modified brinjal created by inserting a gene [cry 1Ac] from the s
 oil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into Brinjal. This is said to giv
 e the Brinjal plant resistance against insect pests like the Brinjal F
 ruit and Shoot Borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) and Fruit Borer (Helicover
 pa armigera). Bt Brinjal is being developed in India by M/s Maharashtr
 a Hybrid Seeds Company Private Limited (Mahyco).\n\nThe Ministry of En
 vironment and Forests, has received strong views both in favour and ag
 ainst commercialization of Bt brinjal in India, from the various stake
 holders, including the State Governments, farmers, civil societies, NG
 Os and scientists. Hence the Ministry has decided to hold national con
 sultations with the various stakeholders before a final view on the co
 mmercialization of Bt brinjal is taken.\n\nWithin this context, Minist
 ry of Environment and Forests, GoI has commissioned Centre for Environ
 ment Education (CEE) to undertake public consultations across the coun
 try.\n\nThese consultations are open to all. We request you to inform 
 concerned person/organisation to participate in the consultations, to 
 ensure all interest groups are represented.\n\nMr. Jairam Ramesh, MoS,
