The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned the burning of tyres. The ruling will ensure burning of tyres in public places such as roads and areas around residential buildings. Burning of tyres is a common practice in India especially during political processions and agitations. In most cases, it is the first step in displaying displeasure and agitation against authorities.

Similarly, what also should be banned is burning of garbage in dumsters, landfills or open dump areas. Today, our garbage is made of several harmful material such as styrofoam (Thermocole) and other plastics. Why doesn't NGT also ban these?

Political willingness is what we require in almost all areas.

I’ve seen people burning tyres during riots, marches, or any such similar events. Most of such events are illegal in India. They, how can government restrict burning of tyres (which is illegal now) in already illegal event.

At least NGT understood the importance of prohibiting burning of tyres. In the country like India, the first step is very crucial during early stage. Law/regulation can be updated later as per the specific requirements.

Yeah, it's a good action by NGT. It will help to reduce harmful effects of air pollution caused by burning of tyres.

Banning something and implementing something is different. NGT should look into implementing this ban too. Besides political procession or agitation, the poor ( read homeless/labours etc) would burn tyres to get rid of chilly cold during winter. How NGT/implementing agencies handle this? Political willingness is also required.

Sincerely

Prakash
