Water from large water bodies when exposed to sunlight has its own poblems.Photoactivity of sunlight in the presence of nutrients such as Nitrates and Phosphates adds to Problems such as Algae growth which is also known as Cyanobacteria. UV can help disinfect provided the contact time is correctly followed by users of UV. There are even more advance methods like Ozone-UV, TiO2-UV which are used for disinfection. Most of the fast oxidizing methods help in controllng pathogens, e-coli and other strains of bacteria. Chlorination must by all means be avoided due to the reaction compounds like THMs being formed. Chlorine Dioxide is on the hand , an oxidizing agent and not a chlorination agent eventhough chlorine is present and is found to be beneficial in controling pathogenic, gram negative and gram positive bacteria.Once again, it all dpends on the volume of water you wish to treat and the convenience of application. There are several methods that can be adopted safely including certain branded products. If the volume oif water to be handled is somewhere in the range of 2 lakh liters per day, then Ionization is a very good method.

Disinfection in layman's terms means deactivating microbes that are pathogenic. Life form can be killed by conventional techniques like heating to boil or by exposing to sunlight. UV irradiation is physical method. Other conventional methods are exposing to active chlorine compounds, ozone or other chemicals. All chemicals are toxic, and can produce disinfection byproducts, of known and unknown toxicity. Man-made chemicals are all eco-unfriendly, just like nontoxic poisons! Eco-friendliness and disinfection property will not go together.

There are many methods that can be used for disinfection.

Wherever there is power available, you can use Ionization which is a low energy consuming disinfection methid for flowing water. particulalry useful when you have to disinfect swimming pools, ponds etc.

In the chemical methods, you can use Ozone, Hydrogen peroxide and Chlorine Dioxide in gaseous form. Ofcourse, this requires on-site generators which is cumbersome and energy intensive.

Perhaps the most convenient method is a liquid disinfectant which is known as Micro2. This is a liquid oxidizing agent which is environmentally friendly, safe for human touch and human consumption but very effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria and some viruses. The liquid solution can be mixed with water or it can be sprayed in air for effective control of odours, airborne bacteria also. This is a non-organic disinfectant used for removal of biofilm also. Dosage are very low at 20 ppm to 150 ppm depending upon the application and microbial loading. Its evry effective and normally works within 10 minutes of application

use potassium permanganate 0.1 % solution. But it may stain as dark. Or use propanol 10%, it is inflammable and make sure it is away from fire.
