In developed countries such as UK and US have proved that vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) can generate power for medium and small scale communities in urban areas. The most commonly used wind turbines are horizontal axis wind turbines. Its main disadvantage is more space is required and servicing is difficult to remove generator. Whereas VAWT can operate even at low heights and produce energy at low wind speed. There is no need for any tall supporting structure. VAWT functions independent from wind flow direction. D. V Subramanian has developed a vertical axis wind mill of 150 watt. He had placed it on roof top of a 3-storeyed apartment complex in Chennai. A VAWT machine has vertical steel blades, with a permanent magnetic generator. When the blades turn electricity is produced. The DC (direct correct) generated is stored in a battery and then converted to AC (alternate current) through the inverters for power supply. The power generated is sufficient for common lightings area for the people residing in apartments. To produce a 250 watt power, a VAWT should maintain a constant wind speed for a minimum period of 12 hrs. The total cost spend for the setup of the machine is Rs 65000/-. Mr. Subramanian has approached the state government to encourage wind mills for multi-storeyed buildings to over come power storage.

It's good approach!

It is great development. We must design for various capacities of enerators for SME so that they can be inbuilt in the project.
