Dear All,

I would like to know how to chose a topic for PhD in Environmental Science?

I know my topic of Interest i.e marine environment & Hydroponic plants. I sorted few topics and many of them were related to energy, botany etc and seniors said me that it doesn't comes directly in Environmental Science, but still its bit confusing that what comes exactly in Environmental Science as it is combination of all sciences .

It would be very helpful if some one help me out sorting current needs & trends of research in our field.

You rightly said that Environmental Science is a combination of lot of sciences that directly affect environment. Energy, botany, water related issues can be covered in your topic. You should go for extensive literature survey among reputed publishers of articles like Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Cambridge journals, Oxford journals etc. Then you can find out the gaps, if any, in research in that field. Accordingly topic can be selected. Your supervisor (probable) can be helpful.

To my mind, hydroponic plants will be a good topic. It shall be applicable to both marine and terrestrial environment. The application of such plants for remedying polluted water bodies can improve environmental quality.

Select an area of research; then search the literature. In practice, there is always a scope for research in any selected area.

One advice: try to improve your control over English language because, after research, you may be an author.

In my views, Environmental Science covers every aspect of sciences, even social sciences. It depends on you and your interest that what problem you consider for your research....... It will be best if you carry  research on the aspects of your interest rather then suggestions by the external person (seniors, guide, supervisor, etc.) and then you select your guide as well as institute to step ahead......

For guidance, Dr Pradeep already mentioned that you should search the journals (national/ international) from the documentation centres of India or online search engines....

Please tell your seniors that Environmental science encompasses physical, biological and social sciences. Hence, you can choose any topic to enroll in Env. sc. Yes, in India, issues such as social impact assessment of EIA are still to be considered in Env. Sc. Regarding marine environment and hydroponic plants, you may very well articulate a doable and workable research hypothesis supported by couple of good research questions.

Let me know what are you looking for and which aspects....

Best wishes

I have a suggestion. once you finalise your topic, please give it  a additional weightage by exploring the possibility of integrating GIS software and mathematical models. people nowadays are more interested in developing models to define their thesis. this is more approachable way to publish thesis internationally.

Hydroponic plants for removal of specific chemicals/oils/pollutants that are frequently/accidently spilled/let into coastal habitat can be studied along with its effects on marine life. literature on effects of pollutants shall be sound enough to justify the problem and to define your thesis.

For Mr.Indresh..N..

While going through the above discussion, i cam across a statement of yours ..."GIS software and mathematical models. people nowadays are more interested in developing models to define their thesis. this is more approachable way to publish thesis internationally. '"

Can you please elaborate to make me understand more about models.

Mam As u r interested in marine environment try "Artificial reef structures" which is new technique developed by National institute of ocean technology chennai.

Hello

I do agree with you. One need to be clear about the work being proposed. Now a days, the GIS component is being included in Ph D proposals, without any clear basis. People just plan some work, and include mapping as one of the objectives. GIS tools should not be used only for mapping. It has much more to give to the researchers and supplement research hypothesis. Regarding mathematical models, one has to have hand on experience of working on mathematical and computer based models. Inclusion of mathematical and computer based models can make a Ph D proposal more spicy, but working on a realsitic model can be a tough task, if not trained well. So any decision in this regard should be in consultation with peers and experts.

Thanks & best wishes

Thank You All.

not necessary to relay on GIS for models.

U can develop models, algorithms and softwares on many things like -

- dispersion of things/pollutants (object or subject).

- to estimate the nutrient requirements to grow certain marine hydroponic plants under certain marine conditions with optimized growth and yield (remember they are quite different)

i did my M.tech Project oh the hydroponics ..... if u interested in that i can some what help you...

Well I appreciate all of you to put your thoughts and suggestions ,,i wish that scholars will be more and more cooperative.. wel..l while not suggesting any topic I would like to say that the candidate  must be aware of few points in -Indian Research Aura- that the topic you are going to take must be justified with the institute where you are going to carry the research i.e. the field of guide/supervisor and the supportive facility because if your topic nature will go beyond these supports then it gonna be difficult and frustrating with low quality work. I always recommend innovative and burning issues..but keep the above points in your mind and moreover go for a 'part of research' to make it a 'piece of quality research' rather include so many objectives..It was seen that many scholars blindly and unknowingly submit their synopsis/proposal with many objectives to justify and cover the all research work but this become a hard nut to be achieved in many cases and the duration of the research goes longer pertaining to deep frustrating and lasts with low quality work...And please beware of statistics it can make your things sound and if you miscarried it then it makes things dumb... yes ofcourse the remote sensing applications and GIS mapping application can be added in any research to adorn it ....hummm..wishing you Best of luck..
