I personally do not know if such a protocol exists, but you can email people in academia, one of our professors Dr Anil Dikshit has probably researched this areas http://www.cese.iitb.ac.in/people/facinfo.php?id=dikshit#research.

It depends on why you want to sample MSW from old dumpsite. What is the purpose ? Do you want to check whether after sieving, the fine material can be used as compost ? A representative sample can be lifted by cone and quarter method, sometimes you may like to lift samples from different depths of the heap (by simply digging or using auger)..

Dear Richa Singh,

The Old Dump Sites of MSW are  mixure of MSW & Bio Medical waste.Once the MSW s are contaminated with Bio medical waste. The entire waste shall be treated as Bio medical waste and treated accordingly.Recovery of any recyclable /Reusable substances resulting to Health hazard. There are only two Options.

i) Tne Entire waste shall be rearranged and capsuled/closed as Sanitary Land Fill.

ii)The Waste in large shall have high calorific value.Hence it may be disposed through Waste TO Energy Plant.

Thank you so much for the prompt reply sir.
The purpose is to adopt economically and technically feasible technology solution for the treatment of existing wastes in a dumpsite and reclamation of the same. But before that we need to do the sampling. I was looking for any standard protocol/guidelines for sampling of wastes in an old waste dumping site. (how many sampling locations, sampling depth, sample quantity etc.)
