Dear All,

I am in need of following information regarding Green Belts.

  1. Is there any definition of green belts provided my MoEF/CPCB or any competent authority? If yes, please provide exact paragraphs of the definition.
  2. Are green belts mandatory by law for the factories or any other infrastructure projects? If yes, what is the minimum area requirement to be designated as green belts? Is there any kind of ratio for the total area verses to be designated area for the green belts?
  3. Are there any specifications for the vegetation to be included in the green belts? Say, a factory has shrubs in the open area (no big trees), will it be considered as green belt?
  4. Please provide link for the exact regulations for green belts. I’ve checked on the web and I found Guidelines for the development of green belts available at CPCB website, and many other publications but didn’t get the above answers.
  5. Who is the governing authority for the green belt related inspections for the factory or other infrastructure projects.

Your help is important.

For infrastructure projects if there is red category industry within 100 m radius and inside local planning area of Town. You have to provide a green belt of 15 m width towards that side

Thanks for this information. Can I get the notification/regulations/order/etc stating the mandatory requirement of green belts? Actually I could not trace the same online.

Please refer to the link http://www.cea.nic.in/reports/articles/thermal/land_requirement.pdf and http://www.cea.nic.in/reports/land_review_report.pdf for the definition of green belt.

Compliance monitoring is done by SPCB and MoEF (Regional Office)

1. CPCB guidelines gives information about question 1.

2. Generally 33% is prescribed by MOEF . 33% of total plant area.

3. MOEF asks to consult with local forest officials like Range officer, Div. Forest Officer in this matter.

4. There is no such regulation but at EC letter it is instructed by EAC / SEAC. Hence, this becomes a statutory requirement.

5. Sub Regional and Regional PCB. In env. statement one has to mention about survival rate of plants in GB.

Dear all, thanks for providing this valuable information. I've summarized the same in one article published on my blog. You can have a look of it from here http://greencleanguide.com/2013/12/04/regulatory-provisions-for-gre... Kindly suggest more things to improve this article. Please comment on the article (comments can be posted at the article itself).

Shailesh,

The blog is interesting. You may consider adding few state specific regulation / guidelines, as this will be more useful to end user.
