This programme is offered as a result of an unique partnership between the University of Glasgow and the Crichton Carbon Centre. The Dumfries Campus is ideally situated to make an important contribution to the international agenda for tackling climate change: it is close to natural carbon sinks, relevant non-government organisations and renewable energy companies.

As a graduate of the programme, you will be able to:
•demonstrate an understanding of the conceptual and methodological bases for conducting high-quality investigations in the context of carbon management; 
•analyse the ethical considerations relevant to carbon management in an occupational or professional context; 
•apply the tools employed for tackling greenhouse gas emissions; 
•evaluate the effectiveness of different strategies employed to tackle greenhouse gas emissions; 
•have the knowledge and technical ability to assess and advise on carbon management; 
•proceed to PhD research, if you wish.

You will also complete either a work placement project or dissertation.

The work placement project (subject to availability) provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in an organisation or company. In collaboration with the host organisation and the work placement project convener you will draw up a project that addresses certain intended learning outcomes and focus on acquiring skills and experience on some aspect of carbon management.

The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable independent research experience. You will be allocated a supervisor based upon your topic of interest and a suitable area of research will be agreed upon, ensuring that the intended learning outcomes of the course are addressed. In the process, the foundations will be laid for potential further research at PhD level.


Funding:

PSAS Awards
The MSc Applied Carbon Management has been allocated funding (full-time and part-time) by the Postgraduate Students’ Allowance Scheme (PSAS) since 2008. This scheme is administered through the Student Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS). These awards are for UK and European Union students only (who meet residence requirements, see SAAS). Students interested in applying for a PSAS award should register their interest with the programme director.

MSc Applied Carbon Management Scholarships
The MSc in Applied Carbon Management currently has three dedicated scholarships, equivalent of the Home/EU fees, for the best applicants. These scholarships are organised through the Crichton Carbon Centre - further information about these scholarships can be obtained from the Crichton Carbon Centre (email [e-mail])

RSK Scholarships
The RSK Group is an environmental consultancy firm with staff across 39 strategic locations in the UK, Europe, The Gulf and Caspian regions. RSK has been supporting this MSc since 2008 in the form of financial assistance to top achieving students. 

Natural Power Scholarship
Natural Power is a renewable energy consultancy. Natural Power has been supporting the MSc since 2008; the appointed Natural Power Scholar will receive half the fees when studies commence and the remaining half if the student is offered and takes up a work placement project with the organisation.

Scottish and Southern Energy Bursary
In the academic year 2010-2011, Scottish and Southern Energy offered a bursary to a selected student; this student is also taking up a work placement project with the organisation.

Entry Requirements:

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, GPA 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject unless otherwise specified.
