Do we need an industry or environment? The definetely reply would be both but is it possible to develop industry without damaging environment.

 

Can the environment will be safe it there is no industry at all?

SHILLONG: The proposed cement plant in Meghalaya by Lafarge is a threat to its numerous cave systems and wildlife, a cave research body has claimed in a petition to Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh opposing green clearance to the project.

As you rightly quoted we need both but when we talk about damage to environment we only consider potential damage which can not be stopped but can be balanced by assessing the impact & providing the mitigative measures through BAT.

What is 'development' of industry, but the ruthless exploitation of people and the planet for the insatiable greed of a few, corrupt and powerful people? If such is the 'industry' we seek, then may it be damned! The word "Industry" means hard work - and agriculture done manually, with the help of oxen and fervent prayers, is the most righteous manifestation of industry. This form of industry does not even harm the environment as it was common across the world, and especially in India, in the post OIL times of simple living and high thinking. With the shimmering mirage of chemicals that Crude Oil bestowed on us in the recent history, the original industry has now become a rabid monster, like in the cases of Posco and Vedanta, displacing people from their homes, raping the natural environment callously, and defiling the very word 'humanity'. The environment and industry can not co-exist in a world where greed, fueled by the steroid effect of crude oil keeps us devoid of virtue. Economic development is a shameful irony, when a multimillion dollar mansion overlooks megaslums in Mumbai - it is a self defeating endeavor to fail in prioritizing environment and humanity as The Most Important.

Dear Biswas Sir,
I have visited there and can understand that what is the condition in Meghalaya. Its a Lafarge Umaim Ltd. near Shella Village. It has a 17 km long Conv. Belt (7+10) for transporting limestone from Shella to Bangladesh. I was there in EIA team during Feb-Mar2010.

Local Residents are now very much active in Jaintia to save their motherland, they are continuously trying to oppose all the illegal extraction activities in Jaintia In some issues they have also get good success. However, hope the coming long awaited bill (Lokpal) will definitely support them in achieving their mission.
