Textile was traditionally produced b hand spinning and hand weaving till textile mills took over depriving employment to many. From production by masses it became mass production. Hand spinning and hand weaving became our weapon for struggle of indepoendence led by Bapu. After independence, instead of discontinueing it the technology became tool for economy. Even when Bapu was alive a mill worker from Coimbatore, Ekamber Aiyer introduced ring frame technology in hand spinning increasing production of hand spinning. The charkha is known as Amber Charkha named after him. Spinning and reeling in case of tassar silk however remained premitive. This was left to Centra Silk Board to work out. KVIC or Khadi & Village Industries Commission was also working out how to improve earning of artisans with better technology. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur started working on these line and modified Ambar charkha with higher productivity. The photos here gives Tassar silk spinning and reeling equipment and improved Charkha of IIT, Kharagpur. A society called Jhargram Khadi & Village Industries Association working in Jungle mahal introduced these implements to ensure better earning. The society is ISO accredited organization and introduced TQM as strategy.
