Does anyone have an exposure on air dispersion modeling? If 'yes', which software do you normally use? Should it be approved by the Government Environmental Agency? Pl let us know...

In California I use the HARP software provided by the California Air resources Board for air dispersion modeling.

Hi Vikram,

We usually use AERMOD for dispersion modeling. It is the US EPA's recommended dispersion modeling software (since 2006). I know a lot of other people who use ISC-ST3. However think its a good time to shift to AERMOD.

Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) does not have a firm guidelines on use of dispersion modeling software use. It is usually included in the ToR for EIA (altough the ToR does not explicitly say which software to use). The sector specific EIA Guidelines (prepared by ASCI & IL&FS Ecosmart) has some guidance on use of air dispersion software.

Interestingly, CPCB has a guideline (most probably published in 1997) on air dispersion modeling. Think it was written by Dr. V. V. Shirwaikar (BARC), Dr. Sharma (IMD) & Dr. Prasad Modak (then IIT-B).

Hi Sandeep,

Which version of AERMOD are you using? How are you managing met data requirements?

Cheers

Kamlesh

Hi Vikram,

As mentioned by Sandeep, both dispersion models (Aremod 0r ISCST3) can be used presently for modelling. The Aermod is the latest one approved by USEPA. For the Latest Dos version of this u need to surf USEPA website.

Best Luck,

Radhey

dear Vikram Pls refer other Post on same topic

Commercial packkages are of Lakes' Aermod As well as Breeze Aermod both has got other module too like ISCST3..Check their website....Lakes' is the best with all necessary input provision to get accurate results....

The available commercial Windows Based Software are....

1. Lakes' Aermod ISC View: http://www.weblakes.com/products/aermod/index.html

2. Breeze Aermod: http://www.breeze-software.com/air/

You can check these software on the websites...Trial is also available for Breeze.....

CalRoads 4.0 and MOBILE 6 are used for transportation based sources.
AERMOD is good for almost all cases, and seems to be well vetted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AERMOD

Hi Kamlesh,

Sorry for late reply. We use BREEZE AERMOD 7.

We have a special tie up with BREEZE, they usually send us MM5 data specific to the location.

Regards.

Sandeep

Hi Sandeep,

Many thanks for your response.

In fact, my query was relating to AERMOD version not 'Breeze' AERMOD vesion, you will appreciate both are different. For met data, I want to emphasize that data from MM5 is just a representative set of met data good enough for modelling.

Now, when the critical set of information (met data) is extrapolated (and expensive as well) - does it make any difference whether someone use ISCST3 or AERMOD?

Note: please read above remarks with respect to the Indian Regulatory Requirements only.

Hope we can discuss further on this issue for the benefit of other members, my intention is just capacity building, because I can see lots of member are interested!

Regards,

Kamlesh

Dear Kamlesh Kumar,

It’s matter of choice and availability of data.
Besides, I think you should concentrate more on constructive activities at envxchange, I have great expectations from you!

Best wishes
Sudhanshu

Hi Kamlesh,

Perhaps I misjudged your question...but I use BREEZE AERMOD 7. Still to upgrade to Breeze 7.3 (EPA AERMOD 11013).

We have tried running ISC ST3 and AERMOD to the same met data (for 2009-10) and emission (point) sources. Although all the inputs were same, the results were strikingly different. ISC-ST3 averaged the annual winds speed and direction, thus producing an averaged out set of isopleths. AERMOD sliced the met data into season and provided seasonal isolpleths, that was true to the windrose. Also the highest GLC value predicted was much higher in ISC-ST3 than in AERMOD.

Thus, without having any prejudice towards Indian regulations, feel that AERMOD is a much sophisticated tool. If used cautiously, it could predict more accurately (please see http://www.epa.gov/scram001/7thconf/aermod/compar.pdf) and could probably save the day for our clients. Its costly, but that could be offloaded elsewhere, by some other means.

Thanks for your reply, we are all trying our best to develop capacity in the group.

Regards.
