A WEED IN PADDY FIELD...THANKUNI

[GOPI KANTA GHOSH]

This small shrub is a weed commonly found in paddy fields, low and water logged lands and fallow lands etc. Popular as Thankuni this plant is popular green leafy vegetable in Bengal. As weed it shares nutrients of paddy for which modern day agriculturists wants to remove with chemical weedisides. But they ignore the fact that this weed do not harm plants but prevents pest attack and do not influence our food chain. With modern plan of application of chemicals first weedicides then pesticides our food chain is poisoned so does that mean development means consuming poison? Very useful information. The leaves are very much like Brahmi (called "Vallaarai" in Tamil) and is generally consumed, and is available in markets also. Could you please tell how it is different from Brahmi?

Brahmi or Bacopa manirii is more useful for brain but not for other ailments as mentioned here.

how to identify the plant by a common man? any visible identification?

Yes it is problem. Either we may depend on local farmer or scholar. Even photoraph may not help since it resembles Brahmi very closely.

Good information sir..i knew about the health benefits of Centella asiatica...but didn't know its biocontrolling activity. Its a good medicine and good for liver, stomach and brain. I have studied  a little about the harmful effects of pesticide drifting on centella asiatica as my M.Sc. Project.
