Normally, when used tyres are disposed of by burning them in the outdoors which pollutes the atmosphere by releasing ugly black smoke extremely toxic compounds in the air. When the tyres are put in the landfills, the heavy metals and other deadly compounds (from the oil and chemicals used during tyre manufacturing) they pollute the ground water.

Converted two of my old car tyres into two settees . They add to the beauty of my drawing room.

Good idea...but how much can be used?

In this nation of millions upon millions of discarded car tyres, the USA, these ecosystem destroyers are recycled into environmentally sound housing -- you can also be paid to take the discarded tyres here to build your home, so instead of paying for your building materials, you are earning from them! : See Michael Reynolds who started it all in Taos/New Mexico. Folks here also use it to grow food as pots placed directly on earth, newspaper lining the bottom contact with earth (to suppress weeds, but allow your plants roots to go through), compost, soil and mulch on top, and there you have it, an organic bed for veggies, herbs and ornamentals. I am just getting ready to work with a local home gardener in the Hudson Valley to get my first practice doing this.

You can also cut the tyre into two and use it as a hanging basket to grow plants.

There are other good uses of tyre and can be used for gardening.

This is really innovative and appreciable too.

But my question is, do the toxic materials used in tyre manufacture (which makes tyres toxic to burn), leach into soil and veggies over time?

You can grow ornamental plants - you wont be consuming those!
